VTG. Santo Domingo 14 Strand Turquoise Heishi Kingman Turquoise 26 Necklace
Santo Domingo Pueblo people are known for their wonderful lapidary skills & have been working with stones & shells many a year back, in more of a primitive time... For those of you who aren't familiar with Heishi, it is where they take either the large rock or shell of choice to be used & then gridding & cutting it into squares, to then drilling a hole into each & every piece & after stringing the square pieces on wire, they are then shaped into rounded beads.. This technique is known to them & is a VERY time consuming process, especially when the stone is cut as fine & small like you will see in this necklace.. The smaller the beads, the more time.. To tell how skilled one is that does "Heishi", is seeing how uniform the beads come out.. Before Santo Domingo people started using Sterling hardware for their closures, necklaces were made longer in order to fit over the head & made with the'Squaw Wrap. The turquoise is from the of Arizona Kingman mine & have lots of black matrix & is very even, in not only color, but each 2 mm range bead size. From time, It has naturally, twisted itself over the years (See last photo).. The Squaw Wrap helps to make it more comfortable on the back of the neck.
Some of the strings have excess & can be cut down. STYLE: Turquoise Hand Cut Heishi Necklace. STONE MEASUREMENT: 2 mm Range. CONDITION: Heishi is good, on "Squaw Wrap", there are some loose threads poking out. I was told that it came from the late 60's-early 70's.
