This sensational handcrafted olla basket has been identified as coming from the San Carlos or White Mountain Apache Reservations between the 1880s and 1900s. Some of the characteristics that speak to this age is the incredibly tight weave and beautiful color of the aged willow. We aren't sure if this is a San Carlos or White Mountain Apache basket, but it is more likely from the San Carlos as the White Mountain baskets over 100 years old are extremely rare. Hand coiled and decorated with traditional Apache designs and using natural grasses and reeds that were found near the basket weavers home, this well-balanced basket has been beautifully woven down to the smallest detail. The animal patterns and diamond-shaped designs have an exceptional symmetry and harmonious balance that is indicative of Native Americans regard for the earth, sky and spirit interactions. This Apache basket also features the rare inclusion of negative animals on a dark background, which is not commonly found in older baskets. The bottom features a four-star pointed design that usually typifies courage and which would have been very meaningful to the artist at the time this basket was created. The willow grasses used have toned down and aged to a warm, light brown while the Devils Claw is still a dark, beautiful dirt brown. This Apache basket, even today, flaunts a tight weave and shows very little wear with minor stitch loss, when you consider the age. Vertically, the weave is about 4 coils per inch and horizontally, 18 stitches per inch, which is another excellent, indicator of its age. It has survived for a very long time in this mostly pristine condition. It only recently started trading hands when parts of the original collection were liquidated a few years back. Unfortunately, this valuable Apache basket was damaged in transit and now exhibits this damage that was then improperly restored.
As you can see in the pictures, the damage is mostly visible on the inside. However, this fantastic Olla Basket is still desirable and valuable as a collectible.
It could be restored by a reputable conservationist. Don't miss out on owning a piece of Native American art history!
